Italy’s competition authority announced on Monday that it had cut the fine to €752.4 million (about $876 million) from the original €1.13 billion penalty issued in 2021. The fine stemmed from findings that Amazon abused its dominant market position by restricting competition in Italy’s e-commerce logistics sector.

The reduction followed a ruling last September by a regional administrative court, which partially upheld Amazon’s challenge to the original penalty.

Despite the lower amount, Amazon said it continues to dispute the case entirely. In a statement, the U.S. e-commerce giant said it strongly disagrees with the regulator’s decision and intends to maintain its position throughout ongoing legal proceedings.

Italian financial newspaper MF first reported Amazon’s decision to pursue an appeal.

At the same time, Italy’s antitrust authority is also expected to challenge the court ruling that reduced the fine, according to the report, setting the stage for a prolonged legal battle.

The regulator declined to comment on the latest developments.

The case is being closely watched across Europe, as regulators continue to scrutinize the market power of global technology companies and their influence over logistics, online marketplaces, and competition.
