London | Jan 14, 2026 — GeokHub Global e-commerce platform eBay has announced its first-ever climate transition plan, outlining a roadmap to cut emissions across its operations and supply chain as it works toward net-zero emissions by 2045.

The plan, released on Wednesday, has been independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and aligns with global efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the benchmark set under the Paris climate agreement.

eBay said the strategy builds on earlier sustainability commitments, including its pledge to power all company facilities with 100% renewable electricity, a milestone it confirmed was achieved in 2024 — a year ahead of schedule.

Major Emissions Cuts Already Achieved

According to the company, eBay has already reduced its operational emissions by 92% compared with 2019 levels. It has also cut emissions linked to transportation by 21%, as part of a longer-term goal to reach a 27.5% reduction by 2030.

Chief Sustainability Officer Renee Morin said the company’s focus now is on scaling renewable energy use, rolling out lower-carbon shipping solutions, and encouraging more sustainable consumer behavior on its platform.

“Our ambition is to fully align with climate science while continuing to innovate across logistics, energy use, and the circular economy,” Morin said.

Shipping Remains the Biggest Challenge

The company acknowledged that emissions tied to shipping remain its most difficult hurdle. Transportation accounts for 84% of eBay’s Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions generated throughout its value chain.

To address this, eBay is working with logistics partners to expand local pickup options and shift some deliveries from air freight to ground transport where possible. The company is also promoting resale and reuse on its platform as a way to reduce waste and overall carbon impact.

“We have to be creative to reach these goals,” Morin added, pointing to collaboration with carriers and vendors as a key part of the strategy.

Industry Comparison

eBay’s climate pledge comes as other major e-commerce players face pressure to cut emissions. Amazon has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2040, while Alibaba has said it plans to reach carbon neutrality before the end of this decade.
