BRUSSELS — Dec 4 (GeokHub) The European Commission has launched a formal antitrust investigation into Meta Platforms over its recent rollout of AI tools in WhatsApp. Regulators will examine whether Meta abused its dominant position by limiting access for competing AI providers, effectively giving an unfair advantage to its own AI service.
The probe centers on Meta’s updated policy: from October 2025, third-party AI providers were blocked from using WhatsApp’s business-messaging infrastructure if AI was the core service offered, while Meta’s own AI assistant remained available without restriction. This move has sparked concern that Meta could be stifling competition and reducing consumer choice.

If regulators find the company breached antitrust rules, Meta could face heavy fines and be required to change its AI access policies. The investigation reflects growing scrutiny from European authorities over how major tech firms integrate generative AI into dominant platforms — and whether such integrations distort fair competition.
