Indonesia’s anti-monopoly agency has imposed a fine on TikTok for failing to promptly report details of its high-profile merger with Tokopedia. Regulators said the delay in filing violated reporting requirements under the country’s competition laws.
The deal, which combined TikTok’s e-commerce operations with Tokopedia, was one of the largest transactions in Indonesia’s digital economy. Officials stressed that while the transaction itself was cleared, the late notification triggered penalties aimed at enforcing compliance and transparency.
The ruling highlights Indonesia’s stricter stance on monitoring large digital platforms and ensuring fair market practices in its rapidly expanding online economy. Analysts believe the fine, though modest compared to the scale of the merger, sends a warning to other global tech firms operating in the region.
