Nike Investigates Possible Data Breach Following Hacker Claims

GeokHub

NEW YORK, Jan 26 (GeokHub) Nike said on Monday that it is investigating a potential cybersecurity incident after a hacking group claimed it had leaked a large volume of the company’s internal data.
The sportswear giant said it is actively assessing the situation after the ransomware group known as World Leaks alleged it had published 1.4 terabytes of data linked to Nike’s business operations.
“We always take consumer privacy and data security very seriously,” Nike said in a statement, adding that it is investigating the incident.
Source was unable to independently verify the hackers’ claims or access the purported data. Nike declined to comment on whether a ransom demand had been made or paid.
Impact & Analysis:
It remains unclear whether the alleged breach affected data belonging to Nike’s wholesale partners, including Dick’s Sporting Goods, Macy’s, and JD Sports. Those companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The incident comes as Nike works to regain market share amid growing competition from smaller athletic wear brands. The company’s shares were flat in late-morning trading.
Cyberattacks have increasingly disrupted major corporations in recent years, costing companies hundreds of millions of dollars. Previous high-profile incidents have hit firms such as MGM Resorts, Clorox and UnitedHealth Group.
