Warsaw, Dec 30 — Poland has asked the European Commission to investigate TikTok after the platform hosted artificial intelligence-generated content, including videos calling for Poland to withdraw from the European Union. Polish authorities said the content was almost certainly Russian disinformation.

The videos, featuring young women dressed in Polish national colors and urging the country’s exit from the EU, gained popularity before the profile was removed.

Deputy Digitalization Minister Dariusz Standerski said in a letter to the Commission that the content posed a threat to public order, information security, and the integrity of democratic processes in Poland and across the EU. “The nature of the narratives, the manner in which they are distributed, and the use of synthetic audiovisual materials indicate that the platform is failing to comply with the obligations imposed on it as a Very Large Online Platform (VLOP),” he said.

A Polish government spokesperson confirmed the recordings contained Russian syntax, reinforcing suspicions of disinformation.

A TikTok representative said the company had been in contact with Polish authorities and removed content violating its rules. The European Commission acknowledged receipt of Poland’s letter and noted that under the Digital Services Act, very large online platforms must assess risks stemming from their services, including those related to AI.

Last year, the Commission opened proceedings against TikTok over alleged failures to curb election interference, including in Romania’s November 2024 presidential vote. Under the Digital Services Act, platforms failing to remove harmful content can face fines of up to 6% of their global annual revenue.

Poland urged the Commission to take action against TikTok for suspected breaches of the EU’s regulations, highlighting growing concerns over foreign influence, disinformation campaigns, and the role of AI in spreading synthetic content online.
