TUMBLER RIDGE, British Columbia — Feb 10 - Ten people, including the suspected attacker, are dead following a shooting at a high school in the small community of Tumbler Ridge in western Canada, authorities said late Tuesday.
Police confirmed that six victims were found inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while two others were discovered at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the incident. Another victim died en route to hospital. At least two individuals remain hospitalized with serious injuries, and dozens more were treated for less severe wounds.
Authorities said the suspected shooter was also found dead at the scene. Police indicated there was no ongoing threat to the public and no additional suspects were being sought.
Community in Shock
The incident has shaken the remote town of approximately 2,400 residents in northern British Columbia, located more than 1,000 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. The school serves roughly 160 students in grades seven through twelve.
Parents gathered at a local community center while officials worked to confirm identities and notify families. Law enforcement said victims would only be publicly identified once formal confirmation procedures were complete.
British Columbia Premier David Eby described the tragedy as deeply devastating for the tight-knit community. Provincial public safety officials noted that local police responded within minutes of receiving emergency calls.
The school will remain closed for the rest of the week, with counseling services being offered to students and staff.
National Reaction
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed condolences to the families affected and postponed scheduled public events in response to the tragedy.
While Canada maintains stricter firearm regulations than the United States, licensed gun ownership is permitted. The country has introduced additional restrictions in recent years following previous high-profile attacks.
The shooting ranks among the most serious mass casualty incidents in recent Canadian history and has renewed national conversations about school safety and violence prevention.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
