Tesla is developing a new variant of its Model 3 sedan, the Model 3+, which promises to deliver the longest range in the company’s lineup. Recently filed documents with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reveal that this single-motor, rear-wheel-drive model will use advanced LG triple lithium-ion (NMC) batteries, aiming to exceed 800 kilometers (roughly 500 miles) on China’s CLTC cycle, a potential record for Tesla.
Model 3+ Specifications
The Model 3+ will feature a 225 kW single motor, a step up from the current rear-wheel-drive Model 3’s powertrain, paired with high-energy-density NMC batteries typically reserved for dual-motor Long Range and Performance models. This combination enhances efficiency over the standard 62.5 kWh LFP battery used in China’s base Model 3, which offers 634 km (394 miles) of CLTC range. In the U.S., the current Long Range rear-wheel-drive Model 3 achieves 363 miles per EPA estimates, suggesting the Model 3+ could push past 450 miles in real-world conditions, a significant leap.
Aerodynamic improvements from the 2024 “Highland” refresh, including a drag coefficient of 0.219 (down from 0.225), lower-rolling-resistance tires, and a streamlined nose, further boost range. The Model 3+ retains the same dimensions and weight as the base model, ensuring no compromise in practicality.
The Model 3+ is a direct response to China’s competitive EV market, where range is a key selling point. Priced around RMB 270,000 (€32,100), it slots between the base Model 3 (RMB 235,500) and the Long Range AWD (RMB 285,500), offering a compelling option for buyers prioritizing distance over all-wheel drive. Tesla’s move builds on its history of range innovation, with a 2018 hypermiling test achieving 606.2 miles in a Model 3, though under extreme conditions. Real-world tests of the 2024 Long Range AWD model reached 370 miles at 70 mph, outpacing its EPA estimate of 341 miles.
Challenges and Market Impact
While the Model 3+ could set a new benchmark, its CLTC range of over 800 km may translate to a lower EPA figure due to stricter U.S. testing standards. Tesla’s decision to launch in China first, with no confirmed U.S. release date, reflects the priority of capturing market share in the world’s largest EV market. However, competition is fierce, with BMW’s upcoming i3 Neue Klasse targeting 560 miles of range by 2027, and Tesla’s recent 25% stock drop in 2025 signals challenges like declining sales and an aging lineup.
The Model 3+ could redefine expectations for affordable EVs, addressing range anxiety and reinforcing Tesla’s leadership in efficiency. Its success in China, expected to launch in September 2025, may pressure rivals to accelerate their own long-range offerings. For Tesla, the model aligns with its AI and robotics pivot, as highlighted in a July 23, 2025, post by @Tesla on X, emphasizing innovation amid a transformative Q2.
Developing Story
As Tesla prepares the Model 3+ for launch, its real-world range and global rollout timeline will be critical. The vehicle’s impact could reshape the EV landscape, but its success depends on execution amid Tesla’s broader challenges. Note: Details are based on recent reports; developments may shift rapidly.
