AI-infrastructure startup Vast Data has reached a landmark agreement worth $1.17 billion with cloud-services provider CoreWeave, underscoring the rapid growth and strategic importance of backend platforms in the generative-AI boom. Under the multi-year deal, CoreWeave will deploy Vast Data’s storage and data-management platform as its primary data layer to support large-scale GPU workloads for training and inference of AI models.

Vast Data, already backed by chip-maker Nvidia and reporting strong recurring revenue, noted that such contracts typically span three to five years. The company will continue serving other major clients including cloud providers and AI labs, while aligning its product roadmap more closely with CoreWeave’s infrastructure demands.

Analysis / Impact:
This agreement highlights how the AI value chain is expanding beyond models and chips into the unseen infrastructure that makes large-scale AI possible. For Vast Data, landing a deal of this magnitude solidifies its role in the AI ecosystem and positions it strongly ahead of a possible public offering. For CoreWeave, integrating Raw-Data’s stack enhances its competitiveness in supplying end-to-end computing platforms to enterprises and AI developers.

The deal also shows that infrastructure firms—once deemed “plumbing” in tech parlance—are now frontline players with multi-billion-dollar contracts, reflecting the surging demand for AI compute and storage capacity. Yet, the scale also raises questions: can these firms manage growth, deliver performance consistently, and avoid the execution-and-capital risks that can accompany such rapid expansion?

In short, the Vast-CoreWeave partnership offers a glimpse of how the AI infrastructure market is evolving, and which firms may emerge as the critical backbones of tomorrow’s intelligent systems.
