PARIS — March 11 (GeokHub) French media company Canal+ has announced a multi-year partnership with Google Cloud to integrate generative artificial intelligence into its content production workflow and streaming platform.
The collaboration will allow Canal+ to use advanced AI tools from Google to support filmmakers, enhance video production processes and improve personalized recommendations for viewers on its streaming services.
The partnership comes as global streaming platforms intensify competition by investing heavily in artificial intelligence to improve content discovery and production efficiency.
AI Tools for Film and Television Production
Under the agreement, Canal+ production teams will gain access to Google’s video generation technology known as Veo 3.
The AI system can assist filmmakers by generating visual previews of scenes before filming begins, allowing directors and producers to experiment with ideas during the early stages of production.
The technology can also help recreate historical scenes using limited archival material, including single photographs, enabling creative teams to visualize moments that would otherwise be difficult or expensive to reproduce.
Canal+ said the tools will also be available to external production companies working on films and projects supported by the media group.
Strengthening Streaming Recommendations
Beyond production, Canal+ plans to use Google’s AI technology to organize and analyze its entire content library.
By indexing its catalog with advanced machine learning tools, the company aims to improve personalized recommendations on the Canal+ App.
AI-powered recommendation systems have become a critical feature in the streaming industry, helping platforms suggest movies and shows based on viewer preferences and watching history.
Major platforms such as Netflix and Amazon have already invested heavily in machine-learning systems to improve user engagement across services like Prime Video.
Global Expansion Strategy
The partnership also supports Canal+’s broader expansion strategy as the company seeks to grow its global subscriber base.
The media group is targeting up to 100 million subscribers by 2030, partly driven by its recent acquisition of African broadcasting company MultiChoice.
According to Canal+, the AI-powered recommendation technology will be rolled out across its streaming markets in Europe and Africa.
Deployment is expected to begin in June 2026.
Protecting Creative Rights
Canal+ emphasized that the agreement includes strong safeguards for intellectual property and content ownership.
The company said its film and media assets will remain protected within the secure technical infrastructure provided by Google Cloud, ensuring creators retain control over their work while benefiting from AI tools.
AI Reshaping the Entertainment Industry
The collaboration reflects a broader trend across the entertainment industry where artificial intelligence is transforming both content creation and distribution.
Studios and streaming platforms are increasingly using AI to assist with editing, visual effects, script analysis and audience recommendations.
As competition intensifies among global media companies, integrating AI technologies is becoming a key strategy for improving production efficiency while delivering more personalized viewing experiences
