Ghana has confirmed its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the fifth African nation to qualify, following a tense 1–0 victory at home against Comoros. The Black Stars’ lone goal, scored early in the second half, proved enough to clinch top position in their continental group and book their spot in next year’s tournament across North America.
In Accra, under the pressure of expectation, the Ghanaian side delivered when it mattered most. The decisive goal came in the 47th minute when Mohammed Kudus tapped in a close-range finish after a low cross from Thomas Partey. The stadium erupted as fans realized the significance—not just the goal itself, but the culmination of Ghana’s qualification campaign.
Ghana entered the match leading Group I and had several permutations in their favor. Even if Comoros had matched them, other results in the group made their qualification scenarios favorable. With the win, Ghana ended the group stage with 25 points, ahead of second-placed Madagascar, who finished on 19 after losing elsewhere.
Ghana now joins Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria as African representatives confirmed for the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup field. For Ghana, this is their fifth World Cup appearance; their deepest run remains the 2010 edition, when they reached the quarter-finals.
The mood across Accra was unforgettable. Joyous scenes flooded the streets, with supporters celebrating long into the night. Players, coaches, and officials embraced—some overcome with emotion about what the qualification means for a country deeply passionate about football.
While the Black Stars celebrate, their focus will already shift to the tournament ahead. Next year’s World Cup will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and Ghana will seek to assert itself on that grand stage. For now, though, October 12, 2025 will be remembered as a proud moment for Ghanaian football.
