Oslo / Dec 12 (GeokHub) The Norwegian Nobel Committee has strongly condemned the arrest of Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, calling the detention “brutal” and urging Iranian authorities to release her immediately and without condition. The committee described the circumstances surrounding her capture as deeply concerning and a violation of her rights.
Mohammadi, 53, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her long-standing activism in support of women’s rights, freedom of expression, and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. She has spent much of the past decade in and out of prison on charges including spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Late last year she was temporarily released from Tehran’s Evin Prison on medical grounds before being detained anew.
In its statement, the Nobel Committee urged Iranian officials to immediately clarify her whereabouts and ensure her safety and integrity, highlighting lingering fears for her health and well-being after years of incarceration and medical treatment. The group also noted the timing of the arrest, occurring just after Nobel Peace Prize celebrations for this year’s laureate in Norway.
