February 24 (GeokHub)Apple said it will shift part of its Mac Mini desktop computer production from Asia to the United States, with manufacturing set to begin later this year at a facility in Houston, Texas.

The move represents the latest step in Apple’s broader U.S. investment strategy. The company confirmed it is expanding its Houston operations to include a new advanced manufacturing training center and expects the initiative to create thousands of jobs.

Apple’s announcement follows its previously stated commitment to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years. The company has been increasing domestic operations in areas tied to advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company remains committed to strengthening American manufacturing capabilities.

The Houston site has already been involved in AI server production, which Apple said began ahead of schedule last year.

Tariff Uncertainty Looms

The production shift comes amid renewed trade policy uncertainty. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously threatened tariffs on products manufactured overseas, including a proposed 25% levy on certain electronics. More recently, the United States imposed a 10% tariff on goods not covered by exemptions following a Supreme Court ruling related to earlier trade measures.

Trade dynamics have increasingly influenced corporate manufacturing decisions, particularly for companies heavily reliant on global supply chains.

Mixed Manufacturing Record

Apple’s history with U.S. production has drawn scrutiny. In 2019, Cook toured a Texas facility that was promoted as a new manufacturing site, though it had been producing Apple computers since 2013. The company later moved some of that production to Thailand.

Despite the Houston expansion, the majority of Apple’s hardware — including iPhones and iPads — continues to be manufactured in Asia, primarily in China. However, Apple has diversified portions of its production footprint to countries such as Vietnam, Thailand and India in recent years.

The decision to bring some Mac Mini production to Texas signals continued adjustments to Apple’s global manufacturing strategy as geopolitical and economic pressures evolve.
