Washington | Jan 14 — GeokHub California officials have opened scrutiny into Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, following concerns over the creation and circulation of non-consensual AI-generated images linked to the company’s chatbot, Grok.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta said the state is seeking urgent clarification from xAI on how it plans to prevent the generation and spread of such content. His comments followed a public call from Governor Gavin Newsom, who urged state authorities to investigate the company and ensure accountability.
“We are demanding immediate answers from xAI on its plan to stop the creation and spread of this content,” Bonta said in a statement posted on social media.
The issue has drawn international attention amid broader concerns about the misuse of generative AI tools and the adequacy of safeguards designed to protect individuals from harm.
In response, Elon Musk said on Wednesday that he was not aware of any AI-generated images involving underage individuals created by xAI’s Grok chatbot. He did not provide further details on moderation measures or future safeguards.
The development adds to mounting pressure on AI companies as governments worldwide consider tighter oversight of generative technologies, particularly where they intersect with privacy, consent, and digital safety.
California has emerged as a leading jurisdiction in AI regulation efforts, with officials increasingly focused on holding technology companies accountable for how powerful AI systems are deployed and controlled.
