Memphis, Dec 30 (GeokHub) Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup xAI has acquired a third building to expand its computing infrastructure, aiming to boost its training capacity to nearly 2 gigawatts, Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter).
The move highlights xAI’s aggressive strategy to compete with industry leaders such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude by training increasingly sophisticated AI models. The company’s supercomputer cluster in Memphis, Tennessee, known as Colossus, is billed as one of the world’s largest AI computing facilities.
Musk tweeted that the new facility, named MACROHARDRR, will serve as a third supersized data center, although he did not disclose its exact location. Reports indicate the building is planned near Memphis, adjacent to other xAI facilities.
The expansion will enable Colossus to house at least one million graphics processing units (GPUs), with construction expected to begin in 2026. Both the new data center and the existing Colossus 2 are being developed close to a natural gas power plant that xAI is building, along with additional energy sources to support the massive compute requirements.
While the expansion positions xAI to scale its AI capabilities significantly, environmental groups have raised concerns about the large energy consumption associated with data centers.
