TEXAS / U.S. — Dec 3 (GeokHub) Marquis, a fintech marketing and services provider, has begun notifying U.S. banks and credit unions that their customer data may have been exposed following a ransomware attack this August. The company disclosed the breach in a filing with regulators, revealing that hackers exploited a vulnerability in its firewall to gain unauthorized access to files.

The exposed information may include sensitive personal details — such as names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, Social Security numbers or taxpayer IDs, and financial account data — belonging to clients of Marquis’s partner institutions. Marquis says it is contacting affected institutions on behalf of current and former clients whose records were stored with the firm.

So far, there is no evidence that the stolen data has been misused. Marquis says it launched the review after noticing suspicious activity on its network and confirmed the ransomware intrusion following internal investigation.

The incident underscores the risk posed when financial institutions rely on third-party vendors to manage customer data. As data breaches continue to rise in the fintech sector, regulators and institutions alike may demand stricter oversight and stronger security practices for outsourced vendors.
