PARIS — Dec 5 (GeokHub) French authorities have requested a court order to suspend Shein’s website in France for three months following the discovery of illegal items being sold on the platform, including child-like sex dolls and banned weapons. The request comes even after Shein deactivated its third-party marketplace in the country, though its main retail site selling clothing continues to operate.
The government argues the suspension is necessary to protect consumers and public safety, citing legal obligations under France’s digital economy regulations. Internet service providers may be ordered to block access to the site until compliance is assured.
Legal experts note that the move could set a precedent for regulating global e-commerce platforms operating in Europe. Consumer protection groups support the action, calling it a critical step to prevent unsafe or illegal products from reaching the market. Shein, meanwhile, faces mounting pressure to demonstrate stronger compliance measures and prevent future violations.
The court hearing is ongoing, and the decision will influence not only Shein’s operations in France but also broader EU oversight of international online retailers.
