A severe cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in August 2025 has inflicted one of the most costly breaches in UK history, with damages estimated at £1.9 billion (about $2.55 billion). The disruption crippled JLR’s production for nearly six weeks and sent shockwaves through its supply chain, affecting over 5,000 organizations across the country.
The Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC), an independent body formed by cybersecurity experts, categorized the incident as a Category 3 systemic event, indicating broad and deep impact. According to the report, most of the financial damage came from the disruption of manufacturing operations at JLR’s three UK factories—facilities that together produce roughly 1,000 vehicles per day. The shutdown not only halted vehicle output but choked the flow of parts, repair services, and supplier operations.
In response to the crisis, the UK government offered JLR a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to help stabilize the company and its suppliers. The intervention aims to prevent supplier collapses that could worsen the ripple effects of this attack.
JLR, owned by India’s Tata Motors, has since resumed operations, though many analysts warn that the total cost could rise if production recovery is slower than anticipated. Some losses may persist in downstream sectors and lost economic activity across affected regions.
