Jan 7 — GeokHub OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT Health feature, marking a significant expansion of the chatbot’s role in healthcare by allowing users to ask health-related questions, upload medical records, and connect wellness applications such as Apple Health and MyFitnessPal.
The dedicated Health tab creates a separate environment within ChatGPT designed specifically for personal health use, one of the platform’s most popular applications. OpenAI said more than 230 million people worldwide ask health and wellness questions on ChatGPT each week.
What ChatGPT Health Offers
With the new feature, users can better understand medical test results, prepare questions ahead of doctor appointments, receive guidance on diet and exercise routines, and compare health insurance options based on personal usage patterns.
OpenAI emphasized that ChatGPT Health is designed to support decision-making rather than replace professional medical advice, positioning the tool as a personal health companion rather than a diagnostic system.
Privacy and Data Protection
Addressing concerns over sensitive medical data, OpenAI said ChatGPT Health operates as a separate, privacy-enhanced space. Conversations within the Health tab will not be used to train OpenAI’s core AI models, the company said, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding user health information.
Regulatory Context
The launch comes amid shifting regulatory attitudes toward health technology. U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary said this week the agency plans to limit oversight of wearable devices and lifestyle-focused health software. Makary has previously described ChatGPT as a product that should be encouraged, while cautioning against exaggerated safety fears.
Availability and Next Steps
ChatGPT Health is initially being rolled out to a limited group of users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. OpenAI said broader access on web and iOS platforms is expected in the coming weeks.
