WASHINGTON — Dec 5 (GeokHub) U.S. lawmakers on the House Committee on Homeland Security have formally pressed Google and Apple to remove mobile applications that enable users to track and report the movements of federal immigration officers, arguing such apps pose serious risks to the safety of government personnel. The letters to the two tech giants highlight concerns over apps like ICEBlock, which had gained popularity for mapping locations of officers belonging to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies.
Committee leaders warned that while free speech remains protected in the United States, it does not extend to content that may incite unlawful acts or endanger individuals. They demanded a full briefing from Google and Apple on their efforts to block such apps and prevent their return.
Google and Apple have already removed ICEBlock and similar apps citing violations of platform policies; however the committee said more concrete measures are needed to ensure continued compliance and protect law enforcement personnel.
