President Trump Announces Immediate Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire Talks After Call With Putin
President Donald Trump has confirmed that ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin "immediately," following a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Speaking from the White House, Trump described the exchange with Putin as “excellent,” emphasizing the urgency of ending the war that has gripped Eastern Europe since 2022. “We are getting the peace process moving—fast,” he stated. “Talks will start immediately between Russia and Ukraine.”
According to Trump, both leaders agreed that it was time to begin direct dialogue to de-escalate the ongoing conflict. However, no formal ceasefire has yet been agreed upon. The President also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with several European allies, to coordinate the path forward.
Putin, in his response, signaled Moscow’s willingness to engage in talks but restated longstanding demands—including Ukraine’s withdrawal from certain territories, a halt to NATO aspirations, and the lifting of international sanctions.
The Vatican has reportedly offered to host the negotiations, though a date has yet to be finalized.
This marks a significant shift in the war’s trajectory, with analysts calling the moment a potential breakthrough—if both sides approach the table in good faith. However, they also caution that major hurdles remain, especially given the deep divides over territory, security guarantees, and Ukraine’s future alignment with Western powers.
For now, the international community is watching closely as the first steps toward renewed peace talks take shape.
