September 2025 — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that Russian athletes will be allowed to participate in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, but only under neutral status.
Neutral Flag, No National Symbols
According to the IOC’s decision, Russian competitors will not represent their country officially. Instead, they will take part as “neutral athletes,” meaning they cannot use the Russian flag, anthem, or any national symbols during the Games. The move is part of ongoing sanctions in response to geopolitical tensions and previous doping violations.
Limited Participation
Only athletes who meet strict eligibility standards and demonstrate a clear record free of doping or political involvement will be allowed to compete. Teams as a whole will not be permitted; participation will be on an individual basis.
Balancing Sports and Politics
The IOC has emphasized that the decision aims to uphold the rights of clean athletes while maintaining a strong stance on global rules. Officials said the measure reflects the Committee’s attempt to keep the Games a unifying sporting event, while recognizing international concerns.
Looking Ahead to Milano-Cortina 2026
The 2026 Winter Olympics, set to be hosted jointly by Milan and Cortina in northern Italy, will spotlight winter sports on a global stage. The participation of neutral athletes from Russia is expected to draw attention and debate, adding a layer of political complexity to the Games.
