President Donald Trump has secured a powerful legislative win as House Republicans narrowly passed his broad tax-cut and spending plan by a vote of 218–214. The bill, which cements permanent extensions to the 2017 tax cuts, underscores Trump’s growing dominance over Capitol Hill in his second term.

Trump hailed the outcome as a “big, beautiful win”, reinforcing his influence over a divided Republican Party and reflecting his ability to push through bold fiscal reforms even amid sharp criticism.

The legislation includes key provisions that benefit business owners and middle-income earners, but also raises long-term concerns about deficits and spending trade-offs. It increases military and immigration enforcement budgets while cutting future spending on several domestic programs.

Critics, including Democrats and some fiscal conservatives, argue that the bill could exacerbate the national debt and reduce support for vulnerable Americans. But Trump’s allies framed it as a necessary step to keep the U.S. economy competitive and bolster national security.

The bill is set to be signed into law on July 4, making it one of the signature achievements of Trump’s second term.
