SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 23 (GeokHub)Amazon announced plans to invest $12 billion in Louisiana as part of a major data center expansion aimed at strengthening its artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure footprint.

The Seattle-based technology and e-commerce giant said the new facilities, to be built in northwest Louisiana, are expected to generate approximately 540 full-time positions. In addition to direct hires, the project is projected to support hundreds of related jobs, including electricians, HVAC technicians and construction workers.

AI Demand Drives Capital Surge

The Louisiana buildout comes amid a sharp rise in capital spending across the technology sector, fueled by surging demand for AI software, advanced computing chips and data infrastructure. Earlier this month, Amazon forecast total capital expenditures of roughly $200 billion for 2026 — a significant jump from the previous year.

While technology firms collectively have committed hundreds of billions of dollars to AI-related infrastructure this year, some investors have expressed concern that the pace of spending could signal overheating in the sector.

Amazon’s shares have faced pressure in recent weeks, reflecting broader investor caution around aggressive AI-driven capital outlays.

Infrastructure and Community Impact

Large-scale data center projects have increasingly drawn scrutiny from communities concerned about power grid strain and water usage. Data centers require substantial electricity and cooling resources to operate efficiently.

Amazon said it plans to allocate $400 million toward water infrastructure initiatives in Louisiana to help offset potential impacts. The company also stated that water use at the facilities will be limited to cooling and operational needs.

To support electrical requirements, Amazon is coordinating with Southwestern Electric Power Company on infrastructure upgrades. The company emphasized it will assume full financial responsibility for constructing and operating the Louisiana facilities.
