Feb 18 (GeokHub) — Meta Platforms is preparing to release its first smartwatch later this year, reviving a wearable device project that had previously been shelved, according to a media report citing people familiar with the matter.

The Instagram owner has reportedly restarted development of its “Malibu 2” smartwatch, which is expected to include health-tracking features and a built-in Meta AI assistant.

Meta initially explored launching a smartwatch roughly five years ago, at one stage considering versions equipped with three cameras. However, the initiative was paused in 2022 amid broader cost-cutting measures within its Reality Labs division.

The revived effort signals a renewed push into wearables as artificial intelligence drives a fresh wave of consumer hardware innovation, particularly in health and fitness technology.

AI Wearables Gain Momentum

AI-powered smartglasses have emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in the category. Meta’s technology currently powers smartglasses developed by EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban. Shipments of the AI-enabled glasses reached nearly 6 million units last year, according to industry data.

Meta is also developing multiple augmented reality (AR) and mixed-reality (MR) devices. Reports indicate that the company is adjusting launch timelines to avoid releasing too many new products in rapid succession, which could risk confusing consumers. One mixed-reality glasses project, codenamed “Phoenix,” has reportedly been delayed until 2027.
