Los Angeles | Jan 15 — GeokHub Netflix has signed a multi-year global licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment, securing exclusive streaming rights to Sony’s theatrical films after they complete their cinema and video-on-demand runs.
Under the deal, Netflix will become the sole streaming platform worldwide for Sony Pictures movies during the first 18 months following their theatrical release, before the titles later move to Disney platforms.
Global Rollout Begins This Year
The partnership will be introduced gradually, beginning later this year as regional licensing windows expire. Netflix expects full worldwide availability by early 2029, allowing subscribers across all markets to access Sony’s latest film releases.
Among the high-profile titles expected to stream on Netflix are:
- Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
- Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda
- The Nightingale, starring Dakota and Elle Fanning
- Director Sam Mendes’ four-film project centered on The Beatles
Strategic Shift for Both Companies
The agreement strengthens Netflix’s push toward licensed studio content, complementing its original productions as competition among streaming platforms intensifies.
For Sony Pictures, the deal provides a reliable global streaming home for its theatrical slate at a time when studios are reassessing distribution strategies amid changing viewing habits.
Sony’s catalog includes recent box-office releases such as Uncharted, Anyone But You, Venom: The Last Dance, and It Ends With Us.
Industry Context
The announcement comes as Netflix continues to expand aggressively, including a pending $72 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets, signaling a broader consolidation trend across the entertainment industry.
Financial terms of the Netflix-Sony agreement were not disclosed.
