March 26, (GeokHub) – A tightening supply of helium linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict is beginning to disrupt global technology supply chains, industry executives said, as companies scramble to secure alternative sources.

Helium plays a critical role in semiconductor manufacturing, used for cooling, leak detection, and precision processes. Prices have surged since the onset of regional tensions, raising concerns about production slowdowns.

Geographically, helium supply is highly concentrated. Qatar, the world’s largest helium producer outside the U.S., contributed roughly 63 million cubic feet in 2025—about one-third of global output, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“A helium shortage is an absolute concern,” said Cameron Johnson, senior partner at supply chain consultancy Tidal Wave Solutions, speaking at Semicon China in Shanghai, one of the industry’s largest gatherings. “Companies have limited options beyond slowing output or prioritizing critical products, and many are hoping for a rapid resolution.”

Prolonged shortages could force production cuts, with ripple effects across sectors including electronics, automotive, and smartphones. Jerry Zhang, China sales head at Swiss semiconductor firm VAT, said the conflict in the Middle East had already constrained helium availability and caused transport delays. His company is exploring alternative sources, including in the U.S.

The supply disruption is also affecting other materials. Zhou Limin of Mycronic’s MRSI unit noted that raw materials from Israel are experiencing delays, extending lead times for customers. Executives at French industrial gases group Air Liquide similarly warned of short-term helium shortages.

As semiconductor demand continues to grow globally, the helium supply crunch highlights the vulnerability of highly concentrated industrial resources and the potential for cascading effects across high-tech manufacturing.
