Paris, Dec 12 (GeokHub) Google is facing a freeze on assets worth approximately $129 million in France after a ruling by a Russian court, according to court documents, marking a significant escalation in legal and financial pressure on Western technology companies linked to Russia-related disputes.
The asset freeze stems from a long-running legal battle involving penalties imposed on Google’s Russian subsidiary over content restrictions on its video platform. Russian authorities previously fined the company for failing to restore access to accounts linked to Russian state-aligned media, leading to accumulating penalties that have reached substantial levels.
Although Google ceased most of its operations in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine, the legal actions against the company have continued. The latest move extends the dispute beyond Russia’s borders, affecting assets held in France and raising questions about cross-border enforcement of court judgments.
Google has not publicly commented on the latest development, but the case adds to mounting legal challenges the company faces in multiple jurisdictions amid geopolitical tensions and regulatory scrutiny.

Analysis / Impact:
The asset freeze highlights the growing complexity of legal disputes involving multinational technology firms operating across politically sensitive regions. Enforcement of foreign court rulings in Europe remains rare and legally contested, but even limited actions can create uncertainty for companies with global assets.
Legal experts say the situation underscores the risks tech firms face when geopolitical conflicts intersect with digital governance, sanctions regimes, and national court systems. While the freeze does not threaten Google’s core operations, it signals increasing willingness by authorities to pursue financial pressure through international channels.
