A catastrophic explosion ripped through an explosives manufacturing facility in rural Tennessee early Friday, killing multiple people and leaving 19 individuals missing and feared dead, according to local authorities.
The blast occurred at Accurate Energetic Systems, located in Bucksnort, roughly 50 miles west of Nashville, at about 7:45 a.m. local time. The building where the explosion struck was completely destroyed, leaving little trace of its structure. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis described the scene as devastating, stating “there’s nothing to describe — it’s gone.”
Investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were dispatched to the scene. Emergency responders initially had difficulty reaching the affected area due to concerns of secondary detonations, further complicating recovery efforts.
The facility produces explosives for military, aerospace, and commercial demolition applications, operating across a sprawling 1,300-acre campus with multiple buildings. Hickman County officials said the plant held no major prior safety record, though a smaller explosion in 2014 resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
Local leaders and community members were shaken: residents reported hearing and feeling the explosion miles away. Homes rattled, and smoke plumes were visible from the surrounding area.
As of now, efforts continue to locate survivors, recover the missing, and determine the exact cause of the explosion. Recovery is expected to span days due to the severity of damage and risks at the site.
