British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has begun a two-day official visit to India aimed at deepening economic cooperation following the landmark free trade agreement signed between the the United Kingdom and India earlier this year.
Accompanying him are over 100 leaders from business, culture, and academia, including executives from BP, Rolls-Royce, BT, and Diageo. The trade deal, finalized in July after protracted negotiations, cuts tariffs on goods ranging from textiles to automobiles and whisky and opens fresh market access for British firms. It is projected to boost bilateral trade by £25.5 billion by 2040.
Starmer described the agreement as more than a document, calling it a “launchpad for growth.” He emphasized the potential for mutual economic benefit, citing India’s expected ascent to become the world’s third largest economy by 2028. In support of the pact, British Airways plans to add flights to Delhi, and Manchester airport will also launch a route to India.
During his visit, Starmer is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bilateral talks. Both countries aim to ratify and implement the trade deal within the coming year. As part of the outreach, Starmer will host roundtables with CEOs and industry leaders to translate the agreement into concrete business deals.
