SEOUL, March 29 (GeokHub) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw tests of a high-thrust solid-fuel rocket engine, new main battle tanks, and special operations forces training, signaling a continued push to modernize the country’s military despite international sanctions.

State media reported that the ground test involved a carbon-fiber solid-fuel rocket engine producing a maximum thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons. The demonstration is part of a new five-year defense development plan aimed at enhancing North Korea’s strategic strike capabilities. Kim described the test as highly significant for modernizing the nation’s strategic forces.

Solid-fuel technology is particularly valuable for military operations because it allows for faster launch preparation and greater survivability compared with traditional liquid-fuel missiles.

Tank and Special Forces Upgrades

In addition to rocket tests, Kim inspected a new main battle tank equipped with an active protection system capable of intercepting nearly all existing anti-tank weapons. KCNA described the tank as unmatched globally.

He also visited a special operations forces training base, emphasizing intense peacetime preparation to ensure readiness for modern warfare. North Korea plans to reorganize its special operations units to enhance operational efficiency and integration with other military branches.

Military Modernization in Context

North Korea has increasingly showcased its military advancements in recent months, including missile demonstrations and combined-arms exercises. Analysts say these activities reflect a strategy to adapt military doctrine to modern combat, with an emphasis on integrating ground, missile, and special forces operations.

During a rare ruling party congress in February, Kim outlined the five-year plan, reaffirming nuclear weapons development while promoting broad modernization of conventional forces.

South Korea and the United States continue to closely monitor these developments, noting the potential implications for regional security.
