2027: Tinubu Endorsed as APC's Sole Candidate, Urges Party to Welcome More Defectors

On May 22, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was officially endorsed as the sole presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 general elections. The endorsement occurred during the APC National Summit held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Abuja. The motion was moved by Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State and seconded by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, with unanimous support from the 22 APC governors and the leadership of the National Assembly.

In his address, President Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the APC, describing it as a natural realignment in Nigeria's democratic evolution. He stated, "You don't blame people bailing out of a sinking ship when they have no life jacket. I am glad of what we have and I'm expecting more to come. That's the game."

Tinubu dismissed concerns about Nigeria becoming a one-party state, emphasizing the constitutional rights to freedom of movement and association. He welcomed defectors, saying, "Welcome to the progressives; sweep them clean."

The president's endorsement and his call for more defections have drawn criticism from opposition parties. The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) described the move as a "desperate bid for power" that could backfire and lead to the party's implosion.

Despite the criticisms, the APC's leadership maintains that the endorsements reflect a strong internal consensus and a commitment to continue the reforms initiated under Tinubu's administration. The party's national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, praised the developmental strides recorded under Tinubu, stating that the APC has transformed from an electoral force into a governing institution.

As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape in Nigeria is witnessing significant shifts, with the APC consolidating its position and the opposition parties strategizing to present a formidable challenge.
