Google has introduced Storybook, a free AI-powered feature within its Gemini app, enabling Nigerian families to create personalized, narrated, and illustrated 10-page stories from prompts, photos, or children’s drawings. Launched on August 5, 2025, Storybook taps into Nigeria’s rich storytelling tradition, aiming to make learning engaging for its 39 million children aged six and under. Users can visit gemini.google.com/gem/storybook, input a story idea, and optionally add images to generate a vibrant tale, complete with narration, on mobile or desktop.
Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s West Africa communications manager, emphasized that Storybook fosters creativity and education, allowing parents and teachers to craft tales that place children at the center of adventures, like turning a doodle into a bedtime story or a family photo into a cultural narrative. Examples include a father transforming his resume into a whimsical “day in the life” story for his daughter. The tool also supports cultural preservation by integrating local traditions and historical figures, strengthening family bonds and heritage.
With Nigeria’s limited access to child-centric educational resources, Storybook offers an accessible digital solution, blending technology with the nation’s oral storytelling legacy. It’s available globally, supporting over 45 languages, and has sparked excitement for its potential in classrooms and homes. Industry observers see it as a step toward redefining digital learning in Nigeria, where storytelling is a cultural cornerstone.
Developing Story
Storybook’s rollout could transform how Nigerian families engage with education and storytelling, with potential to expand its impact as Google adds more languages and features.
