President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a firm directive to Nigeria’s top security chiefs to immediately bring an end to the deadly violence plaguing Benue State, following a brutal massacre that claimed dozens of lives.
The president’s directive came on Sunday through a statement by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who noted that Tinubu was deeply disturbed by the unrelenting attacks on innocent civilians.
“The President has directed security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and peace is restored swiftly,” Onanuga stated.
The renewed violence in Benue has left communities devastated, with scores feared dead and many more displaced. The killings are believed to be part of the long-standing conflict between farming communities and armed militias.
Pope Francis Responds
In a show of global concern, Pope Francis offered prayers during his Sunday address at the Vatican, expressing sorrow over the loss of life and urging all parties in Nigeria to work toward lasting peace.
“I pray for the victims of violence in Nigeria and ask the Lord to bring comfort to their families and peace to their land,” the Pontiff said.
Benue State, located in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, has long been a flashpoint for violence, particularly between herders and farmers. The recent attacks mark yet another grim chapter in a series of unresolved security challenges across the country.
President Tinubu, who has made security reform a pillar of his administration, has faced pressure to deliver tangible results amid rising insecurity in several regions.
