The United States has placed Brazil and South Africa on its human trafficking watch list, citing concerns over their efforts to combat exploitation and strengthen protections for vulnerable groups.
Officials say the two countries were flagged in the latest annual review of global anti-trafficking measures, which tracks how governments address issues such as forced labor, child exploitation, and support for victims.
The designation does not carry immediate penalties but could lead to increased diplomatic pressure and possible funding restrictions if corrective steps are not taken. Washington urged both governments to expand enforcement, improve victim support systems, and tighten monitoring across key sectors.
Brazilian and South African authorities have not yet issued formal responses, but rights groups in both countries argue that structural reforms and stronger resources will be needed to meet international standards.
