Feb 6, 2026 (GeokHub) - Apple is preparing to allow voice-controlled artificial intelligence apps from third-party developers to operate within its CarPlay system, marking a significant shift in how the company approaches in-car digital assistants.

Until now, Apple has limited voice control in CarPlay exclusively to its own Siri assistant. Under the planned changes, drivers will be able to interact with AI chatbots from other companies directly through the vehicle’s infotainment interface, expanding CarPlay’s functionality beyond Apple’s ecosystem.

The move would enable AI developers to offer CarPlay-compatible versions of their apps with built-in voice interaction, allowing users to ask questions, retrieve information, or perform tasks hands-free while driving. However, Apple is expected to maintain firm control over the system’s core functions.

Users will not be able to replace Siri as the default voice assistant or change the CarPlay wake command. Instead, third-party AI tools will require users to manually open the app before activating voice mode, preserving Siri’s position as the system’s primary assistant.

Apple is reportedly working to roll out support for these features within the coming weeks. Developers will be able to design their apps so that voice mode launches automatically once the app is opened, streamlining the experience for drivers.

The decision reflects growing demand for more advanced conversational AI in vehicles as consumers increasingly rely on generative AI tools for navigation, information, and productivity. It also signals a cautious but notable evolution in Apple’s traditionally closed approach to platform control.
