VAUX-DE-CERNAY, FRANCE — March 26 (GeokHub) — France has begun discussions with around 35 countries to explore a coordinated international mission aimed at reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz once the ongoing Middle East conflict subsides.
The talks, led by France’s armed forces leadership, highlight growing global concern over the long-term security of one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.
Global Effort to Restore Shipping
The Strait of Hormuz, which carries roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies, has seen shipping activity slow dramatically amid tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Recent attacks on vessels and heightened military activity have disrupted maritime traffic, raising fears about sustained energy supply disruptions even after the conflict ends.
French officials said the discussions are part of early planning efforts to ensure safe navigation resumes quickly once hostilities ease.
A Defensive Maritime Mission
According to France’s defense authorities, the proposed initiative would be strictly defensive in nature.
Its primary goal would be to restore freedom of navigation and secure shipping lanes rather than engage in combat operations.
The plan could involve multiple phases, including clearing naval mines and providing protection for commercial vessels traveling through the strait.
International Coordination Underway
France’s military chief, Fabien Mandon, held a large-scale virtual meeting with representatives from countries across different continents to gather input and assess potential contributions.
Separately, senior naval officials, including Nicolas Vaujour, have been engaging with counterparts from key maritime nations such as United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, India and Japan.
These discussions focus on maintaining maritime security and ensuring the continued flow of global trade.
Leadership From France and Allies
French President Emmanuel Macron has indicated that any mission in the Strait of Hormuz would likely require international coordination, potentially under a broader global framework.
United Kingdom officials have also confirmed they are working with allies on a practical plan to reopen the waterway, though they stress that de-escalation in the region is a necessary first step.
Military Preparations Underway
France has already positioned military assets in the region, including an aircraft carrier strike group in the eastern Mediterranean, along with additional naval vessels and support ships.
These deployments are seen as part of preparations for potential future operations related to securing maritime routes.
Experts note that clearing naval mines could be one of the most challenging aspects of any mission, requiring specialized equipment and coordination among multiple nations.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways in the world.
Any prolonged disruption could have serious consequences for global energy markets, trade flows and economic stability.
Ensuring its security will be a key priority for governments and international organizations once the current conflict begins to ease.
