WASHINGTON, March 3 (GeokHub) U.S. President Donald Trump moved on Monday to defend a widening military campaign against Iran, describing the operation as necessary to block Tehran’s missile and nuclear ambitions while leaving open the possibility of a prolonged conflict.

In his most extensive public remarks since airstrikes began over the weekend, Trump said the joint U.S.–Israeli military action was initially expected to last several weeks but could continue beyond that timeframe if objectives are not fully met.

“We’re already substantially ahead of our time projections,” Trump said at the White House. “Whatever it takes.”

Shifting Objectives

The administration’s stated goals have evolved since the launch of strikes. On Monday, Trump emphasized preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and halting its long-range ballistic missile program — allegations Tehran has consistently denied.

He did not explicitly call for regime change during the appearance. However, in earlier comments over the weekend, he had encouraged Iranians to “take back” their country, a remark widely interpreted as signaling support for leadership change in Tehran.

The military campaign has reportedly struck more than 1,000 targets across Iran, including naval assets and missile infrastructure. Iranian authorities have not independently confirmed casualty figures or battlefield losses.

In response, Iran has launched missiles and drones toward regional targets and disrupted maritime activity near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which a significant portion of global energy shipments pass.

Messaging Under Scrutiny

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed suggestions that the administration’s communication strategy has been inconsistent, stating that the president had clearly outlined objectives centered on regional security and force protection.

But comments from Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to add nuance to the administration’s position. Speaking to lawmakers, Rubio indicated that Washington anticipated Israeli military action and chose to act preemptively to avoid higher casualties among U.S. personnel stationed in the region.

The differing emphases have fueled debate in Washington over whether the operation is defensive in nature or part of a broader strategic recalibration in the Middle East.

Timeline Remains Unclear

Trump’s timeline for the campaign has also shifted in recent days. Initial estimates suggested operations could last roughly four weeks. Subsequent remarks expanded that window to four to five weeks, with the president later declining to set a firm deadline.

In a formal notification to Congress, Trump acknowledged that the full scope and duration of military operations could not yet be determined.

Security analysts say the absence of a defined endpoint leaves open multiple possible scenarios — from a contained strategic strike campaign to a more sustained regional conflict.

Jon Alterman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies said the administration appears to be keeping its long-term objectives flexible. “I’m not sure they’re committed to any particular outcome,” he said.
