TEL AVIV, Feb. 28 (GeokHub) — Israel declared a nationwide state of emergency on Saturday after Iran launched retaliatory missiles in response to coordinated U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.
Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered sweeping security measures, including banning public gatherings, closing schools and non-essential workplaces, and mobilizing tens of thousands of reservists. Police urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to ensure emergency services could operate without disruption.
Emergency Measures Across the Country
Hospitals activated emergency protocols, with facilities such as Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv transferring patients and departments to fortified underground areas. Medical officials said the move was part of heightened preparedness measures amid concerns of continued missile and drone attacks.
Israel temporarily closed its airspace to civilian flights, while land crossings with Egypt and Jordan remained open. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem advised its personnel to shelter in place following earlier guidance that staff could leave the country if they chose.
Limited Damage in Initial Barrage
Iran’s first wave of missile launches resulted in few immediate reports of significant damage or injuries, according to Israeli authorities. The country’s layered air defense systems intercepted multiple projectiles, triggering nationwide sirens that directed residents to bomb shelters.
In Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, residents responded with caution. Some rushed to stock up on food and withdraw cash, while others expressed confidence in Israel’s security capabilities.
