The event featured choreographed songs and dances alongside a taekwondo demonstration, as crowds welcomed the start of the new year in the capital.

Kim was accompanied by his daughter, Ju Ae, who has frequently appeared at major public events in recent years. State-released images showed her sitting beside her father, holding his hand and interacting with children during the festivities — appearances that continue to fuel speculation among analysts about her future role in the country’s leadership.

Kim Praises 2025, Signals Focus on Unity

In remarks delivered during the celebration, Kim praised what he described as the population’s collective efforts, crediting them with delivering notable progress and “phenomenal changes” over the past year.

He emphasized national unity ahead of a major ruling party congress expected in early 2026, where North Korea is set to outline its policy direction for the coming five years. The gathering is widely anticipated to address priorities including defence capabilities, weapons development and economic planning.

Message Sent to North Korean Troops in Russia

State media also reported that Kim sent a New Year message to North Korean soldiers deployed alongside Russian forces in the Ukraine conflict.

In the message, he described the troops as a source of national pride and a pillar of strength for the country, expressing hope for their safe return.

“Be brave. Behind you stand Pyongyang and Moscow,” Kim was quoted as saying.

Diplomatic Signals

According to state reports, Kim received New Year greeting cards from several foreign leaders, including China’s leadership, though no specific names or details were disclosed.
