OSLO, Oct. 10, 2025 — Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless struggle against dictatorship and her commitment to democratic freedom in Venezuela.
Machado, 58, has lived in hiding since she was barred from running for president in 2024. Despite threats and arrests of her allies, she continued to lead peaceful resistance against President Nicolas Maduro’s authoritarian regime.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her for “defending freedom and democracy under extreme repression,” adding that her courage embodies the spirit of the Nobel Peace legacy.
Machado becomes the first Venezuelan to receive the Peace Prize and the sixth Latin American laureate in history. Her recognition has been welcomed globally, with the UN Human Rights Office describing it as “a reflection of the Venezuelan people’s desire for fair elections.”
The award announcement came amid global attention, including remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly claimed he deserved the honor. Analysts said the committee’s decision demonstrated its independence and commitment to genuine democratic values.
It remains uncertain whether Machado will attend the December 10 ceremony in Oslo due to security concerns.
