Heung-Min Son to Join LAFC in Record-Breaking MLS Transfer
Seoul, South Korea – August 6, 2025, 11:55 AM CEST – Tottenham Hotspur’s captain, Heung-Min Son, is set to leave the club after a decade, signing with Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC (LAFC) for a record-breaking $26.5 million (£20 million) transfer fee, surpassing the $22 million paid by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath. The 33-year-old South Korean star announced his departure during a press conference in Seoul on August 2, calling it “the most difficult decision” of his career. Son’s move, finalized after advanced talks, is expected to be unveiled by LAFC in the coming days.
Son, who joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for £22 million, leaves as a club legend with 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 appearances, including 127 goals and 71 assists in 333 Premier League games. He captained Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years, lifting the Europa League in May 2025 after defeating Manchester United. His final Spurs appearance came in a 1-1 pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul on August 3, where he received a guard of honour from both teams.
The transfer to LAFC, where Son will join former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris, reflects his desire for a new challenge, despite interest from Saudi Arabia. His market value of €20 million makes him one of MLS’s most valuable players, and his signing is expected to boost LAFC’s profile, especially among Los Angeles’ 320,000-strong Korean community. On the pitch, Son’s pace and finishing will enhance LAFC’s attack alongside 2023 Golden Boot winner Denis Bouanga.
