Saudi Arabia Eliminated from 2026 World Cup After 2–1 Defeat to Australia
Saudi Arabia’s hopes of an automatic berth in the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an abrupt end after a 2–1 home defeat to Australia in the final qualifying group match in Jeddah. The result secured Australia’s spot in the tournament—its sixth consecutive appearance—while consigning Saudi Arabia to the AFC play-offs.
The Green Falcons drew first blood in the 19th minute through Abdulrahman Al‑Aboud. However, Australia struck back just before halftime with a first international goal from Connor Metcalfe and took the lead early in the second half via a powerful header from Mitch Duke.
Saudi were awarded a late penalty, but captain and goalkeeper Mat Ryan—celebrating his 100th cap—pulled off a crucial save that sealed the victory and their progression.
Australia’s coach Tony Popovic lauded the result as confirmation of strong squad development, highlighting their unbeaten form and tactical resilience. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia must now contest additional rounds in October’s AFC play-off phase, facing a tougher road to qualification.
